Identification

The Jackson County School District is participating in an ongoing statewide effort to identify, locate, and evaluate children birth through age twenty, who may have a physical, intellectual, communicative and / or emotional disability.

Evaluation

Prior to evaluation, notice of invitation for child study as well as a copy of the Procedural Safeguards is given to the parents. District personnel explain the Procedural Safeguards to the parents and ensure that they understand the procedures for assessing. After parental consent for assessment is obtained, a nondiscriminatory comprehensive evaluation is conducted. Students are evaluated by a multidisciplinary evaluation team in all areas related to the suspected disability. JCSD studies cases in the following divisions: Initial evaluation, re-evaluations, out-of-state transfers, transfers within state and preschool.

Placement

When a student, age 3 through 20 is determined eligible to receive special education services, parents are notified. Before the student receives special education services, an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) is developed for the student, and parents sign consent for placement. Administrators, teachers, and parents (students when appropriate) participate in this process. All students receiving special education services are reevaluated at a minimum every three years. IEP’s are reviewed/revised at a minimum of annually and progress is updated at a minimum of every nine weeks.

Please contact the Jackson County School District’s Office of Special Education at the following address and telephone number if you know of any individuals who need to be referred: Jackson County School district, 4700 Colonel Vickrey Rd, Vancleave Ms. 39565-5248 or call 228-826-0158.
